Campbell was the star of the New Zealand team competing in the FEI Eventing Nations Cup at the Houghton Hall International Horse Trials in the UK. He and Amsterdam II were second in the CCIO3*, with the team fourth – just 1.7 penalty points off the podium.
Campbell was seventh at the end of the dressage, added four in the showjumping and 0.8 time in the cross country to finish on 27.6, with winner Laura Collett (GBR) and Mr Bass finishing on their dressage score of 26.3.
Campbell’s team-mates Caroline Powell aboard Sinatra Frank Baby and Neil Spratt on Galwaybay Echo were 36th and 57th respectively. Germany won the Nations Cup competition for the fourth consecutive year, on 99.8 with the United States second on 109.1 and Ireland third on 118.1.
Chef d’equipe Jacky Green said the New Zealand team had ridden their socks off. “Finishing fourth, just 1.7 off the podium, was a bit gutting but beating the (sixth placed) Brits is always a pleasure,” she said. “It was a long drawn out CCIO3* but the team were truly awesome and everyone did great.”
Campbell also held on to place second in the CCI1* aboard Diachello II. The combination were in second at the end of the dressage on 27.1, and added just a single time fault in the showjumping to finish on 28.1. Winner Dirk Schrade (GER) and Dajara 4 led from the start to take the class on their dressage score of 24.6. Campbell bought Diachello from Schrade last year and the horse is one he is picking for the future.
Spratt and Gaillard Lancer placed eighth in the class, coming up from 21st after the dressage, and finishing on their dressage score of 31.
Todd and McClaren had to settle for runner-up in the CCI3* at Saumur Complete in France, finishing on 35.1 penalty points. They scored 30.3 in the dressage, added 4.8 time in the cross country, and wound out the event with a lovely clear in the showjumping moving them from seventh to second. Winner Chris Burton (AUS) and Quality Purdey held on to their overnight lead thanks to their clear efforts in the showjumping, to finish on 29.2.
Thirty-six started the competition, with 20 seeing it through to completion. Todd and Burton were the only to go clear in the showjumping.
