In the East Coast Performance Horses Five-Year-Old Series Logan Massie and Double J Kelvin couldn’t be beaten – and he wasn’t even in the country for the finals.

Bred by the Massie family, Double J Kelvin is a five-year-old gelding by Double J Repicharge, out of JK Madam Seattle.

Logan’s younger sister Georgia, 20, who is studying towards a Bachelor of Agricultural Science at Massey University in Palmerston North also rode the horse this season, and attended series finals – but on crutches rather than a horse.

“Logan was in Florida for three weeks after HOY and now he’s based in Germany. The horse had had a big season and had already won the series, so we weren’t planning to bring him to series finals, but I was going to ride my six-year-old. I was out hunting my cousin’s pony and he got stuck in a fence and kind of fell on my foot.”

The Massies bred the horse and Logan broke him in and rode him for the first part of the season, with Georgia taking over the ride in January, so the series win has been a team effort.

So, do they have high hopes for the horse’s future? “I think so. Logan is pretty good at telling a good horse and is pretty excited about him – he wants him back next season. We think he’s very talented, he’s careful and consistent.”

At this rate, Logan might have to fight his sister for the ride. “I’m trying, but he kind of his horse,” Georgia admits.

“It’s is quite exciting (to win the series). Logan got most of the points, I didn’t really do a lot, but it’s good for us as a home bred and produced horse.”

In the final, it was a great day for Wellington’s Heloise Tolo, taking out the class on Dangermouse NZPH, clear and fastest in the jump-off, despite a slipped saddle. She was also third on her second ride, Doris NZPH, jumping clear. Sophie Scott and the big grey Glenbrooke Rich As Roses were also clear and slotted in to second place, pulling up to sixth overall in the series.
