Georgia Massie (Dannevirke) couldn’t have asked for a better result in her first ever Premier League start at the Wairarapa show at the weekend.
The 19-year-old aboard Larinium LS blitzed the Bayleys Real Estate Premier League backing up the result by also winning the Futurity Class and placing second in the FMG Young Rider class.
Seven riders started in the Premier League with Massie fourth to go in what was described as a challenging track to jump clear. Despite a few rattles, luck was on her side and she managed two clear rounds. Massie’s game plan was to stay on task.
“I just focused on riding how I walked it, tried to stick to my plan and not worry about anyone else” - she said. It wasn’t until the second round Massie had an inkling she could win the class.
“I started to back myself to win in the second round. I knew all I had to do was jump clear and go fast, which was going to be hard enough.”
Massie admits the few World Cup starts last season have boosted her confidence at this level and her aim now is to maintain consistency.
“My plan for the season is to consolidate at the level I am riding at, at the moment focus on what I want from the sport.”
Massie says her nine-year-old gelding Larinium LS is “a good honest horse”. She’s had him since he was a four-year-old and as a combination they’ve moved up the levels from Young Rider, to Grand Prix and Premier/World Cup.
Sophie Scott (Pauatahanui) aboard Benrose Playtime won the Country TV Pony Grand Prix with Georgia Percy (Masterton) and Surprise Illusion in second place. Briar Burnett-Grant (Taupo) and Fiber Fresh Veroana continued their good form this season winning the FMG Young Rider Series.
