Sam McIntosh certainly has strong equestrian genes – her father Colin competed successfully in both eventing and showjumping and rode for New Zealand at Olympic level. Her mother Penny Stevenson is a celebrated coach, a former chairman of selectors for Equestrian Sports New Zealand, a high performance selector and rode at top level.

McIntosh headed to Europe in 1996. She rode for Bulgaria for nine years, at many top events including the Sydney Olympics, five European championships and two World Equestrian Games. A rule change in 2010 saw her come back to black and ride for New Zealand at the World Equestrian Games in Kentucky.

McIntosh did base back in New Zealand for a short time after the 2010 world champs, but the lure of international competition proved too strong, and she headed to Europe once again.
