Daniel Meech was born into the world of equestrian. His parents and grandparents were keen and very successful riders. His father Gus was in 2008 awarded the RS Pilmer Plate for his service to Equestrian Sports New Zealand, and is also an honorary life member of the organisation.

At around five Meech started competing at local sports meetings and had his first foray onto the hunting field. In 1994 he was the New Zealand Young Rider champ. His first big win onshore came in 1995 in a World Cup class, the same year he headed offshore to pursue a serious equestrian career. He headed to Germany where he worked for top showjumper Paul Schockemohle. In 1998 he had his first big win, in the Grand Prix in Munich.

His 12th individual placing at the Athens Olympic Games remains the best effort by a New Zealand showjumper. In 2004 he also won one of the world’s biggest shows, the Kuala Lumpur Grand Prix, heading home a 30-strong field of the world’s best.
