Profile

Nicholson has ridden at all seven World Equestrian Games, with his best individual result a bronze in Kentucky in 2010, when New Zealand also won a team bronze. He and Todd were in the gold medal-winning team in 1990 in Stockholm. He has represented New Zealand at seven Olympic Games and arguably ridden more horses in more events than anyone else.

Horse: Nereo (by Fines, out of Berganza-17) – a 14-year-old Spanish bred chestnut gelding.  Nereo is an incredibly consistent horse who has taken Nicholson to the podium many a time at top events. In 2010 he won two bronze medals for Nicholson at the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games in Kentucky. 2012 he won the CCI4* at Pau, and was fourth at the London Olympics. In 2013 he was third at the Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials, second at the Land Rover Burghley International Horse Trials and second in the FEI world rankings for the season. He has also won many three star events.

The owner: Deborah Sellar

Libby Sellar has had horses with Nicholson for more than quarter of a century. She has had horses at three Olympics, three World Games and many Badmintons and Burghleys.

But the excitement and hope remain as keen as ever,” she says.

Sellar has owned Nereo since he began eventing as a five-year-old and admits to being very attached to him.

Sellar says she finds the show jumping phase to be the most nerve-racking in eventing.

I know one owner who spent the time of her horse’s round in the loo with her fingers in her ears. Sometimes I cannot look, but can tell what is happening by the murmurs – and hopefully not groans – of the crowd. One hopes for the final roar of approval after what seems the longest minute-and-a-half in the world.”

Horse:  Avebury (by Jumbo, out of Memento) – a 14-year-old home-bred grey gelding. Avebury has won three Burghley CCI4* titles back to back, a hat-trick of Barbury Castle CIC3* crowns and is regularly in the top 10 at every start.

The owners: Mark and Rosemary Barlow and Nicholson

Brit Rosemary Barlow finds it a tad conflicting to have a Kiwi riding her horses, however, she’s a huge supporter of this world-class rider.

It always give me great pleasure for one of my horses ridden by Andrew to represent his country and even more to hear the national anthem when successful,” she says.

The Barlows have had horses with Nicholson – and only him – since the mid 80s.

We have only ever had one argument in all that time!”
